Dr. Joseph McCullers, WCMS President 1903

Joseph Joel Lane McCullers (1850-1926) was the founding President of the Wake County Medical Society in 1903. He had a distinguished career as “County Physician” and Health Officer of Wake County. Membership increased from 19 in his first year as president in 1903 to 53 in his second term.

He managed 16 smallpox cases in 1903 and a large outbreak of TB. Dr Harvey G Utley of Apex served as WCMS Secretary.

Dr. Augustus Knox, WCMS member, NCMS President 1936

Augustus Washington Knox (1849-1936) taught at Raleigh’s Leonard Medical School. He was a trustee of Rex Hospital and later president of NCMS. After 2 decades most NC County Medical Societies had dissolved. Wake remained strong. His impassioned plea “kick-started” a renewal, “The county medical society is the most important of all the medical bodies. While the state and national societies are necessary, their greatest value depends on the fact that in them can be centered the power and influence of the county society.”

Dr. George Paschal Jr., WCMS President 1948

George Paschal was a graduate of Wake Forest College of Medicine and later a Trustee of Wake Forest University in Winston Salem. Member of the undefeated Daemon Deacons 1927 basketball team. Graduate and later Trustee of Wake Forest Medical School in Winston Salem. Captain US Army in WWII. Head of Surgery at Raleigh Community Hospital and concurrently at St Agnes Hospital. Honored by Old North State Medical Society and Milton Quigless, in 1989 with a plaque that reads, “Dr. George Paschal, Jr., of Raleigh, in the face of strident criticism by his peers in the North Carolina Medical Society, was one of the few who openly aided these efforts. Dr. Paschal courageously broke the tradition of medical segregation during his presidency of the North Carolina Medical Society in 1965. His motion to change NCMS bylaws to “… remove the words "white" and “scientific members” passed 117-28 to provide equal membership.” George and his wife Beth were inducted into Raleigh Hall of Fame 2007.

Dr. Don Lucey, WCMS President 1984

Don Lucey a Raleigh Urologist from 1971-2005, founded the Open Door Clinic in Raleigh in 1985. This was North Carolina's first free clinic providing medical care to uninsured patients. When demand increased, Lucey helped establish the North Carolina Association of Free and Charitable Clinics. In 2017 he was awarded the Order of the Longleaf Pine by Governor Cooper. The Duke Alumni Association awarded Dr. Lucey the Humanitarian Award in 2003 for improving healthcare for underserved populations.

Dr. Elizabeth Kanof, WCMS President 1983

Dr. Elizabeth P. Kanof was in private practice, running a dermatology office in Raleigh following training at New York University and Duke dermatology residency in 1963. President WCMS and later served as President NCMS and President NCMB. Founder of NCMS Kanof Institute of Professional Leadership. Recipient of multiple professional awards. Lifetime member of Wake County Medical Society. Dr Kanof and Dr Robert Bilbro teamed up to challenge physician participation in executions in 2007.
